you would be correct that it should be rank 3 as stated at the end of chapter 5 ,but at the same time it doesn't make much sense that it ranked up during that metamorphosis seeing as the hobgoblin wasn't compatible with the hairs adaptation. So this could be a plausible retcon

Wasn't this explained in a previous chapter. I believe it was something like "if it didn't differ significantly from else it has eaten it wouldn't be added to the system". The only difference between a rabbit and a deer is its size and, depending on whether the deer was male or not, antlers (which for the most part are made up of the same materials as bones).
