Gambeson is cloth armor from the medieval ages(some variations of leather), most soldiers without the privilige or money to buy plate armor or chain armor would have it. It's effective against slashing attacks and semi effective against arrows, but never as effective as chain or plated armor. It's one of the most forgotten armor types from history.

Everyone has their own opinion on harems, just from a writing pov its hard to make every member feel useful.
