Like was it some kind of catastrophic event? Maybe some powerful being that could wield unimaginable power had reforged the entire landscape creating this plateau that had its own mountains. To be honest, I think the powerful being route might not be too far off. When my mother was teaching me history, there were stories of past wars that changed the land in many ways.
