The main character, Leo comes into the picture at chapter 11. The previous chapters are as important as it gives us key insight into situations surrounding his birth. Madeline saw her grandfather walk around to stand behind Beth, placing both his hands on either side of her head. Madeline then heard things, she would have never imagined her grandmother to say to Beth.
