It's the implication that you can't be friends with men which makes people think you're gay. I had a childhood friend(whom I had slowly drifted apart from) who people thought was gay because he didn't really have male friends other than me who wasn't seen around him much at school. I didn't think he was gay, but all the accusations had me thinking he was sometimes. It's just a little weird for a dude to mostly have female friends. It depends on his personality though, because if the dude acts masculine then people would just call him a playboy instead.
From an outsider's perspective, it's strange, people might think he's gay or something, but he doesn't really care what others think about him, because he's straight.
