The barrier is really tough and difficult to crack, and reflects damage back to the attacker too, the reason it took damage now is because the power difference between Grimm and the Cursed Spirit

The rest was to make sure Grimm was taking it seriously, the answer itself didn't matter. First God, but not a strong one. Just because you are a god does not mean you have to be strong. And Darksouls is very low on the power ladder.
