I personally think it's that and when his parents were tortured he was forced to watch which forced his grandparents to put him under the forgetful curse but he kept breaking out and because they had to use it so many times it's damaged his memory

when you really think about it herbology in Harry Potter is the most overpowered thing. Not only can you use it to make dozens of unique potions but I'm sure you can train a pet plant into attacking your foes and with that spell that makes plants grow super fast you could basically throw seeds at the ground and shoot vines into the air like your a grass type Pokemon

I don't feel like it would have much effect on Thanos unless he's supercharged it since I believe he probably has some kind of resistance against magic either through his strong leak or his race and the reason I think this is because he basically takes hits from Thor hammer which is imbued with a lot of magic and divine energy and just gets back up and hits it back
