Yes, the book itself is based on the mc’s mistakes which is indeed ‘hypocritical’ This book doesn’t promote hate of any kind and the characters actions. To answer your question, what the Mc is hiding is his real status and not the dreamself he is acting out to be. Apart from that, there are other details (His family and his past) that are found towards the end of volume one because it explains better. Does this answer your question?

Writing this chapter, I used Charles Marlow's character from she stoops to conquer to justify why Wu was at the bar.
