I think events in the present are better done in a descriptive way, including the characters' speeches, behaviors and reactions rather than just narrating what happened. I believe this type of narrative is best used to describe past events. Just a suggestion.

Personally, I don't consider it cheating. You can't say a beast tamer is cheating by fighting his beasts. Same thing with the MC, he's obviously a spirit mage, so he has to fight with his spirits.

I'm just a fan of first-person storytelling, I think it helps readers connect with the characters. However, for this novel I would be very happy if the narration was in third person. The MC is very dramatic, reading this guy's thoughts is simply torture.
