I don't know if it was the author's intent, but Emmelyn is the biggest hypocrite among hypocrites. She keeps complaining about Mars's traits that SHE herself embodies. He's inconsistent? She's been inconsistent since they met. He avoids her and keeps his distance from her? She's been attempting to do that as often as she can. He says mean things to her to make her feel unworthy? She's been doing that to him since the beginning. And even then, Mars's reasons for doing it are better because he strategically chooses his words for a certain desired outcome. Emmelyn, on the other hand, just carelessly says horrible things because she's too selfish to care about the emotional effect it will have on the person in question.
So Emmelyn acts rude and cold to him for the entire time that he treats her like a goddess, but when Mars finally realizes that she hates him and he should keep his distance, Em acts like Mars is the one causing the issues between them and that he's being "mean" to her??? Em is lacking in soooo much self-awareness. She's just selfish and misses being treated like the most important person in the world, even if she's undeserving. 😑 I read a lot of books, and typically, people who are depicted as selfish and uncaring as Emmelyn is, are meant to be seen as horrible people, but for some reason it's supposed to be ok that she's doing it? There's a saying that goes:"To those who are accustomed to privilege, equality feels like oppression." Emmelyn got so used to all the special treatment Mars was giving her despite her rudeness, that when Mars started giving her the same cold and distant treatment she keeps trying to give him, only NOW does she realize how hurtful it is. Except, it's even worse because she still doesn't realize how hurtful her actions were, she only cares about how SHE is feeling.
My thoughts exactly. She made her bed (figuratively) asked now she has to lay in it. This is what she wanted. "Be careful what you wish for; you just might get it" as the saying goes.
