the ambiguity of their gender means we don't yet know if they're a boy or a girl, meaning they've probably got an androgynous appearance. if you've read or watched tensura, the native dudes of that world swoon upon seeing mc without knowing they used to be a guy, don't got reproductive organs, and have gynephilic preferences. nowadays it's safer to err on the side of caution and use 'their' and other similar words if it's not obvious if somebody's a guy or a girl via their appearance.
