I started reading post change, so I am not sure what it was like before. However, in it's current form I think the story reads quite well and is very interesting.
At a high-level this is a reincarnation 2nd chance story. The unique twist, is the MC is actually the bad guy and they have to address the effects of the bad things they did not their homeworld. The setting appears to be roughly Late Roman Empire to Dark Ages (though a lot of the armor is described as Bronze so that throws things off a bit). Also, the MC does do some quasi-uplifting (Waterwheel and Seed Drill {which is tough to classify timewise as it existed in Summer and ancient China but not in Europe til the 18th century} ). The MC is a mage (with a lot of experience making them very OP in all encounters to date), but even Warriors seem to have the ability to enhance themselves with basic magic. World Building is very good ( which is very nice as your are getting 2 different world's background over time). Besides getting info from the Character interactions. You are get some historical/background notes (in the form of history book texts) at the start of a few chapters to help give context and meaning to the situation the world is in.
Is it really a good idea to invite a Miller to Dry City. She is from one of the top families of the Kingdom. So, she could accidently "spill the beans" about Dry City.
Smart man! Too many leaders fall into that trap.
The only downside with what is coming. Is I really do not feel any empathy toward the MC. It is known that the MC really hates his brothers, but since the story started after his childhood. As a reader developing a similar level of hatred for George just is not possible. Especially, since he really has not been any sort of villain in the story. Other than short-changing the MC regarding support to the MC's lands. Which did not hamper him based on how things turned out. George really has not done anything.
Didn't Downs already meet Nela during the war? Downs was the one against her plan and I thought they talked at the end of the meeting.
Ha
Charles Martel and his children were the Mayor of the Palace which basically means he was the manager of the King's lands. Which is how the Merovingian dynasty became figureheads and then eventually deposed. Later on, most Nobles and King's just divided up the power across multiple positions. They also used quarters of Nobility and/or Imperial/Royal Immediacy (i.e. how many Nobles are in a person ancestry and which families did they come from to limit legitimacy). Lastly, positions that sound unimportant like Head of the Wardrobe, many times would became one of the most important positions, even though they did not control any real assets of a Noble.
Not bad for Downs. He is now 4th in seniority behind Burns, Burgess, and Ethan (forgot his last name) who are all now Dukes.
Man the MC is like half a Noble. He only likes the fighting part and the getting lands part. He completely misses the importance of relationships (especially in a time before social media and mass printed word), and the long-term planning/development part (Which is something most people ignore or only concentrate on extreme cases like Tywin Lannister. However, legacy and developing your lands/titles is a big part of being a Noble)
This got wrapped up quickly. If Eugene continues to throw resources at these activities Amondo will mop the floor with him. I wonder if his early success against Amondo's brother is clouding his thinking. As Amondo appears to bring a lot more skills to the table than his brother had.
I am not sure this would of worked out for Ryder. Forging a river is no joke, especially large fast moving ones. Plus Nela was actively working for holes in the Defense to protect her Dad. It is more likely Ryder would of got caught mid-crossing and get his Van destroyed and most of his Middle killed or routed. Leaving only his rear to escape with. Which Burn would happily hunt down and slaughter. In the end Burn would go to the table with the King. Since he seems to have more fun causing trouble than actually trying to get the crown.
Though Ryder would definitely use and throw them away. I think the other suggestion from earlier was probably best in hindsight, just leave the army become a bachelor knight and find a new liege.
If the MC were a spy, he would be the best actor in the world. Because his whole personality and actions basically scream not spy and not cunning at all.
Ha, now this is a bit different than I thought. I thought the other Duke took him out. The King is walking a fine line here.
