Kai, in a sense, is also a guardian of the truth, like Ariel, due to his Flaw. It seems to me that the test in this Nightmare is to see if you are worthy to know the truth and not let it consume you. Is it possible that Kai found something from Ariel like Sunny did with Weaver and he inherited her legacy/powers? Maybe that forced the truth upon him, and once that happened he made sure Neph died and he defiled all the others, Sunny became his slave and was able to read his runes and learn the truth, which Defiled him, but allowed him to retain some semblance of self (Or Sin of Solace, of Weaver's legacy).
It seemed that he did not have to wonder what fate would befall him after Nephis was killed in the future. He had thought that Mordret… the Soul Stealer… would be the one to use Shadow Bond and become his master after the current one disappeared. I am guessing he will be back as the last enemy before ascending a god. Too good of an enemy to die "out of camera".
