While becoming a sensor wouldn't give him any strength boost, it has serious versatility and maybe becoming one would build his defense against stuff like the Yamanaka clan techniques. He was already immune to any Genjutsu due to his perfect chakra control. He wasn't sure if he could escape a Mangekyou's Genjutsu like Tsukuyomi. Not like he was going to test that any soon.
