In China, academic background is almost EVERYTHING. Unlike the U.S., where becoming a doctor requires a 4-year undergraduate degree + 4 years of medical school (to earn an MD), China’s basic medical education is a 5-year undergraduate program. A huge gap RIP. Because the minimum requirement to become a licensed doctor in China is an undergraduate medical degree, the entry barrier is seen as lower. As a result, advanced degrees (Master’s or PhD/Doctor of Medicine) are highly valued, especially in top-tier hospitals as they signify more specialization, research ability, and competitiveness. This leads to a perception that doctors with only a bachelor’s are less “serious” or “qualified,” even if they’re fully licensed.
