Extreme weather conditions, diseases and scarcity of provisions first caused Napoleon's troops massive losses over a short amount of time, then the Russian army opted for a strategic retreat, employing attrition warfare against Napoleon compelling the invaders to rely on an inadequate supply system, incapable of sustaining their vast army in the field. Afterwards, instead of defending the city, the Russians retreated to preserve their troop strength, leaving it deserted and set ablaze, while never finalising any peace proposals. Left in an unfamiliar environment with inadequate supply system over a long period of time, while enduring relentless guerilla warefare from Russia, Napoleon's troops crumbled. So the Russian used the fact that their opponent had no experience of fighting in this kind of environment and their (therefore) lacking supply system to let them defeat themselves while preserving their own manpower.
