If his soul was black his words here would make sense, as black is the aggregate of all colors while white is the absence of all color. A way to phrase this in a way that makes white the best of the color coded talent would be that the purity of one’s soul changed the color of it, at which point black would be talentless and therefore more than likely impossible as it would basically connotate the absence of a soul, while white would connotate absolute purity and talent.

Yes and no. He saw Ann emerge from Anna and knew that she was her card, but never learned her name. So upon seeing a ‘free’ Ann, it’s not implausible for him to assume Ann is her twin. Unless the author did forget
