The few mages that could hit their mark knocked them back down. Most other spells disappeared into the night sky. "K-keep going," one of the instructors attempted to encourage with empty words. A pillar of pure red flame sprouted out of the clouds like a beacon into the night sky. Doevm curled up his body as he dodged left. The proximity alone singed his hair and skin. A horrid stench fouled the clean air. He let himself fall to the ground, dismissed his wings, and bolted, all his life essence condensing around his legs. Sixty feet to go, and another pillar appeared. He dodged right into the magic circle of another Hellfire Pillar. Thomas reached for the match and Zolgon pulled back, just as predicted. Faints only worked if they were convincing. He threw the black powder into the king's face and ducked too late. A blind tail stab scraped against his skull, sending a wave of pain through Thomas's numb body.
