One-shot idea for someone to write-up in the comments while we wait: In order to practice using the Master's bloodline to reflect/redirect magic attacks, Arran captures a magic-using Blightspawn, ties it up, and has it keep attacking him with magic. And then ...
Gale will definitely give the biggest immediate power-up. His strength and weapon vastly outclass any regular knight, so if he is also vastly faster, he should be able to quickly kill any (non-paladin, non-imperial) knight. The healing from the immortal only matters if they can wound him!
Agreed. He would benefit greatly from learning the Imperial Knights' techniques. And the Immortal bloodline would be great. But the Gale bloodline would be even more useful because it would allow him to avoid being injured in the first place by warlocks or normal knights, killing them fast enough to protect his allies. It would also allow him to flee from anyone who lacks the Gale bloodline or a true insight into speed.
True, faking his death in the Desolation will allow him to escape the Imperium unlooked-for. But until he breaks the seal, he can't betray the Imperium or its secrets, so he can't help the Valley. The matriarch MIGHT be able to help him break the seal, BUT Brightblade says the matriarch has secrets that are connected to the Imperium, and the same sealmaker provides the seals to the mages. So Arran may have to break the seals on his own, in which case he should stay in the Imperium, where he will learn more.
How would the ruined city help knights bond with their shadowmetal daggers? Arran and Karanos bonded with their shadowmetal weapons by sharing magical essence. How would knights do it? Arran's sword disdained natural essence, so natural essence seems unlikely to lead to bonding.
In addition to justifying a sudden supply of pure shadowmetal coins, traveling to the ruined city will also allow Arran to give to Wolfsblood the starmetal swords he found in the tunnels by Amydon (ch282) and in the battlefield where he met Negin and Merim (ch 312 "several other startmetal weapons ... plenty of weapons").
With his sword's sense, Arran will be able to find all the starmetal and shadowmetal weapons and essence crystals in the ruined city. The sword can't sense shadowmetal coins (according to chapter 297), but a trip to the ruined city will still enable Arran to explain having a huge stash of pure shadowmetal coins, so they can then be spent.
Good idea! If Arran can kill most of the common soldiers before the knights arrive, the Devourer's bloodline may power him up enough to defeat three knights 1x3. The trouble will be that if anyone lives (Shir?), they will claim that Arran acted dishonorably as a knight attacking common soldiers without cause. Arran doesn't buy their honor system, but it will be trouble if Shir (or his bereaved father) uses that accusation to unite the martial alliance against Arran. So if he does this, he probably needs to leave no witnesses -- meaning that even the Wolfsblood army doesn't see it.
