As mana is still the primordial energy in the world David resides in, Flux is basically a separate source of purified & condensed mana, therefore it is only 1/10 the amount of normal mana. Because it is a separate source, David would actually need to replenish both sources as they aren't 'connected'. It means the reason why he doesn't want to use flux is that it makes it harder to replenish than normal mana and it takes that regen time from mana as well.
