I think it's as you think as well. Hiding her abilities so that people will underestimate her and then she reveals it when it's the most effective. THAT, and the fact that she probably realizes how annoying it will be if people find out and crowd her so she likes to stay low key as well to be hassle free.

Ruth seems to keep her grounded I like that.
