Red shift and blue shift are actually used to determine the direction and speed of a star with respects to us if it is red shifted it is moving away from us if it is blue shifted it is moving towards us the bigger the shift the faster the speed it’s like how when a car passes you it’s higher pitch when it approaches and lower pitch when it passes you. The age of the star is determined by the light it gives off. Every element on the periodic table has a specific light spectrum that it gives of so scientists use the light of a star to determine what it is made of then use that to find out out its relative age. Older stars have heavier materials. A shift is an actual shift in that spectrum making the colors look more red or blue
