Seeing how X was digging faster than it was, Y puffed out its chest, a spark of rivalry igniting in its eyes, and started digging even faster, the two Charmanders now glaring at each other with competitive fire in their eyes, as if sparks were flying between them.

A 37 year old in a 10 year old body. You know normal anime stuff.
This was even more unbelievable than dying and being sent to the past. He was a grown trainer, a Pokémon Champion! How could he possibly be four years old again?

Well first the I choose you movie is a canonically separate Ash to the anime Ash we have known for nearly three decades now. The Ash we do know however... has definitely been in life threatening situations not really near-death. With the exception of Mewtwo in the first movie, but Mewtwo erased all those memories... Can't really recall another time it has happened for him.
Reading those three words, Ash felt a jolt of panic shoot through him. Died? He couldn't have died! But the next words offered a strange sort of comfort.
