It's someone who actually trains the pokemon for a living in one way or another. Just like fulltime dog trainers do who then have their dogs compete in dog shows or work as working dogs. If some criminal has a fighting dog, that it uses to attack people that doesnt make said criminal a dog trainer. just like how jessie and james are not pokemon trainers.

dont need to be a fanboy for it, its mostly a filler because it disrubted the flow of the setting you made with the war. if this came after the war, it would not have felt all that much like a filler. the only petpeaves that would make it feel as such are the lack of a 3 or 4 man team. i doubt that the village just lets people leave willy nilly, when spies and traitors are a real threat. if it was. so if he involved the village more into this and did it post war, it would have just been a cool after war mission.

I dont rly wanna say because you might drop it and then I have waited for this filler to end for nothing... but... basically in the middle of a shinobi war, where numbers are so stretched that they have early graduations from kids in the academy. Your mc not only leaves the battlefield which was the hook of the story, but takes a vacation in the form of a Samurai Tournament Filler Arc. then devalues himself even more as an MC by apparently doing everything Sakumo did in his life. sure he has sakumo's template but that doesnt mean he has to lead the same life, he should be his own person. by having him apparently go through this filler arc in sakumo's footsteps hes essentially devalued as a wannabe sakumo copycat. And whats next? he's just... gonna get his chakra metal return home from his vacation and suddenly care about the war again? I mean I hope so, but its the same effect those fillers had in the anime. but thats just my opinion
