Finally a good instructor! I read a lot of novels were the instructor was training the newbies and he only taught them how to strike and feint. They never said anything about throwing punches with the empty hand, kicking their balls when you have the opportunity or just spitting into their eyes if you are close enough. Those 'dirty tricks' would make their lifes so much easier in some scenarios.
It also has a longer reach than a sword and has a relatively simple moveset: thrust, sweep, pierce and throw. It can also be learned relatively fast. And is easy to block with.
