People stepped on other people's heads to get ahead, there was no other way. Being the last Blood Elf he had to live on or his race would completely die out, really the boy didn't care about his race that much. The way he saw it, he didn't want to die so he lived, coincidentally he was the last of his race so he could pass down his bloodline on the way.
