as a kid i was proud of my collection of tiny pencils. you know, when it is just an itty bitty pencil from all the times it is sharpened.... most of it i nicked from someone else, i do hang around after class and help "clean up" I end up taking home stuff like erasers, pencils etc. I guess the habit of stealing office supplies started young for me.
Yes, from an outsiders view his life was going great. To be honest even he himself had to admit that there was nothing he could complain about, but regardless he was bored with life. Socializing with friends bored him. His career bored him. He took up a few hobbies to try and find something interesting to do, but nothing worked. He reminisced about his days as a kid when everything was filled with wonder and everything excited him.
