Umm, acktshually🤓, da Vinci was already a world-famous maestro by the time he painted the Mona Lisa in his later years. He brought it with him when he moved to France to serve as a court painter for the French king, and though one of his prominent works, it was never the painting that defined his legacy until it would get worldwide recognition after being stolen in 1911 from the Louvre. Idk, I think that's his whole charm, what makes him compelling and a likeable protagonist. He remains cheerful and optimistic even in the face of adversity, hiding his more fragile heart beneath the surface. His earnest demeanor draws people toward him, and his goofy knuckleheadedness is part of his charm. He's one of the very few who are consistently and honestly kind, in a very headstrong way, in his cruel world. The story would for sure be very different if he wasn't like this, and I'm not sure it would be better. I don't really think this narrative leaves the original with quite enough credit, but that's just my opinion.
