It was not the question of whether she is a good mother or not.Bhishma and his siblings were the incarnations of the 8 Vasus. They were cursed by a Great Sage Vashishta for trying to steal the Celestial Cow Nandini who was the daughter of the wish fulfilling divine Cow Surabhi. Bhishma in particular was the incarnation of the leader of the Vasus. When the Vasus requested the Sage to forgive them and somehow reduce the curse. the sage told them that all the Vasus except their leader would die within a few moments of their birth. This is the reason why Ganga Mata drowned all her sons except for Bhishma. There are too many stories which are connected with just this incident. Like why Ganga Mata married Maharaj Shantanu and many more. Only after knowing all the stories will we understand why it happened. I would suggest you to read the original complete Mahabharata. It is one of the Greatest Epics and is also a part of the History of my motherland Bharat.

I'm not saying that Swarga is more beautiful Than patala or anything. Patala is more like world of luxury, wealth and pleasures while swarga is more of a realm of spiritual acension.

There is kalpavriksha in Swarga that can literally create anything one wishes for. They somewhat similar to dragon balls. There are many such unique beings & artifacts in Swarga which is also one of the many reasons that Swarga is targeted by Asuras, Daityas, Rakshasas etc. Also Patala doesn't just have Asuras, there is Nagaloka - Abode of the Nagas.though the Nagas exists in all the dimensions including Swarga. Also Asuras are not Demons/ Devils they are more of an Anti-Gods. The Devas are Suras and the Asuras are the antithesis to Suras.
