True, but even in the real world poverty has a negative effect on people's appearance. If you are poor you might not have enough food, you might have to work more demanding jobs, and might not have the time to worry about your appearance etc. All these factors will cause your appearance to deteriorate, and there are many more such factors that could be caused by poverty.

It's not like they would be sleeping in a 5 star hotel each night. They would be camping for the majority of the journey, which is exhausting. Also no good food, not being able to wash yourself, boredom, all of that is physically and/or mentally exhausting.

Sure, but western food is an umbrella term for all European and North American cuisine, labeling all that as a single dish is quite dumb.
