If you re-read the prior passage, it says he pounced on her and she hugged him back; therefore, one can also argue that she kneeled down while embracing him.

I don't think it was Elizabeth. I think it was Maryanne and perhaps confused his crush since then. That is why he found so many similarities.

I liked his point if view it gives us more information on his character and perhaps will clarify why he feels the way he does towards the main character. I have a hunch it maybe a misunderstanding that Isabella caused.
