After rereading this novel multiple times I think in a way in their past life they were trying to protect Rosalyn, to avoid Rosalyn's execution Alexander decided to exile her instead, on the other hand Gine knows that exiling her won't be enough for some people considering she's not very well liked so they may purposefully make her life terrible or just straight up torture her till she dies, so to avoid that he decided to give her a quick and painless death (in which I agree since I don't want to be tortured myself) so in my opinion they're not really the bad guys just more on the gray area
