Yeah, you're right. The issue here is that the author didn't make it a coherent choice based on the character's previous choices and actions. Hey, MC killed more than once, no matter the reason. So his argument didn't seem strong or coherent. To make it more believable, the author could have just made it look like the character could have eaten it but, before eating it a terrible intuition prevented him from doing it. Only then would it make sense: MC wants to grow stronger, MC wants to eat a pill that makes him stronger, something makes him hesitate (can a pill really make me stronger? As a modern man I know that drugs have side effects), he investigates and is repulsed by the pills provenance. THEN it would make sense.
