Baba gave the relic that led to Matthew's birth. That relic belonged to Josef. Matthew is a part of Josef but that 'darkness' was kept subdued by the wolf in Matthew. When Baba suppressed that wolf, when Ava was gone, Josef found a way back. Matthew is Josef's vessel on earth... Thanks to Baba.

There are layers on layers on layers in the story. What a terrifically rich fantasy world the author has created. Each chapter ending is a cliffhanger and - oh! - does the book get too hot to handle frequently! 🥵🥵
