You made the point yourself, we should have seen him experimenting with the mana bullets during the 3 year training itself, three years is an incredibly long time , it should have been impossible to not even try anything new , it is just poor writing

It's simply because he didn't experiment or try the skill with any kind of variation. The only reason he could do it now is to showcase his "adaptability" to the reader ( which completely failed as I feel the author at this point in the story simply used the time skill as a gimmick as the idea probably wasn't completely thought through this early into the story)
