Well, I was wrong in my presumption. Not a translation error. ... How was I supposed to know?! The author did say the lover was actually a man: just his lover, the mage's lover, or he. Q No actual reference to an actual man, and plenty of translators make that mistake.

It's probably a translation error. When a writer writes he/she or his/her, there is a no gender term.
From what he read in one of Haven Online libraries, he found out that there was once a mage who was kidnapped by his ex-lover.
