Like he should not have slapped, because it may have really caused the deal off or make it more difficult. For you should understand that they are now in fragile relationship and even tiniest example may have caused great pains. But he could have instead "threatened" the director even more by saying that he should educate his granddaughter or maybe in the future she wont be as lucky even if the person she "accidently" killed is homeless.

For now its not explained how it even works. But I guess using physical objects is like having 100mbps internet vs 5mbps internet. In addition, it takas time to summon the scroll and maybe it even has time limit. Which rings most likely won't have.
The Internet could be summoned through prayers, so how were they going to ban it?
