That's the masochist we grew up to like, go ahead and feel pain to become the strongest.
To become stronger as a Myrtharian he needed challenges worthy of him, constantly pushing his limits. He had thought he was just unlucky not to find a worthy predator, but he was wrong. If there was no challenge worthy of him, he could simply handicap himself!
