Tbh it doesn't really matter cause he's the son of roger and he will be targeted. Not to mention talking big is better to build momentum so that he can gather more crews. Plus haki is related to spirit so having confidence is always better to enhance something so illusory.

Even if an individual learn armament haki it doesn't mean he can even use full body armament and not to mention coating a whole friggin ship. Sure Douglas bullet coat a Gundam type haki bigger than a ship but even then it was connected with his DF and not to mention his strength was already on the level of admiral or Emperor league. If mc got that kind of strength already when he set sails, who would bother with this kind of stroyline.

Theoretically a flame can burn much brighter, stronger and hotter than a magma. It depends on the fuel tho....so maybe stamina might help as a fuel for the DF.
