More mass means more force required to change the object from being at rest to being in motion (requiring acceleration, f = m * a). In this case the author is correct.
Compared to landbound mechs, spaceborn mechs predominantly carried a notch less mass around. This was because it took a lot of energy to move these mechs around in space. Well they are likely far enough that the far larger heavy mechs can block the much smaller lighter mechs at the current angle. It is sci-fi, be imaginative. Also the turrets are mostly destroyed, reasonably speaking turrets of the kind you described would have been targetted first.
