That's mostly because it was made on a budget of less than half a million. Rian Johnson edited the film himself at his home. It's sound quality is very bad, probably due to low quality equipment, but the visuals are awesome given limited budget.

He's a great actor, but he doesn't do good 'acting' roles anymore. In last 15 years, he hasn't done a single lead role that wasn't an action film.
