From my experience, atheists are desperate to fill the hole in their lives left from their lack of faith. That is why they can't just live and let live. They have to attack, demean, and antagonize as a way to validate themselves and their beliefs; no matter how flimsy that belief is. Almost like it's faith itself.
If there was one major complaint that Berengar had about Christianity, it was their propensity to deny and destroy all evidence that pointed out the flaws in their religion. To some extent, this radical rejection of truth, in favor of faith in God, had remained engrained in the hearts and minds of Christians well into the modern era.
