I see, so I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree. I still prefer OP protagonists, even with the flaws you mentioned. Personally, I don't really care if the character is just some random guy who "didn't earn" their power. To me, how they got that power matters far less than what they actually do with it. Weak-to-strong stories also have the issue you brought up: they often get bogged down by endless training arcs, side quests, or missions that exist solely to make the MC stronger. A lot of the story ends up being spent on power progression instead of actually moving the plot forward. With an overpowered MC, the author can skip a lot of that and focus on what many people read fanfiction for in the first place: changing the original story, exploring different character interactions, and seeing how the world reacts when someone capable shakes things up. The character's growth doesn't have to come from becoming stronger; it can come from their relationships, decisions, and the consequences of their actions. A good example is Homelander. From the very beginning, he's already the strongest character, and that never really changes throughout the series. His popularity doesn't come from watching him train or unlock new abilities; it comes from his personality, his interactions with other characters, and the tension he creates simply by existing. Because the writers never had to focus on a traditional power climb, they could spend more time developing the cast and the story around him, which is a big part of what made the series so engaging. But everyone has their own opinion, so good luck to you. I hope you find many novels that fit your taste.
That's basically the reason why the best fics of slow-burn novels like LOTM or Shadow Slave always have an OP MC. BTW OP DOESNT MEAN INVINCIBLE.
Because, in my opinion, it's simply better that way. Weak-to-strong protagonists often take far too long to reach the point where they can actually influence the story. When you combine that with slow updates and a slow-moving plot, it can feel like the story is going nowhere. You also have to remember that the vast majority of fanfics never get finished. A huge percentage are abandoned after a few dozen chapters, so I'd rather the author get to the interesting parts sooner instead of spending hundreds of thousands of words on a gradual power climb. More importantly, one of the main reasons people read fanfiction is to see how the original story changes. If everything happens exactly as it did in canon because the MC is too weak to make a difference, then what's the point? In many fanfics, the protagonist already knows future events, but knowledge alone doesn't mean much if they lack the strength or influence to act on it. Without the power to change things, the story often ends up being little more than a retelling of the original with a different narrator. So yeah, as long as the fic isn't guaranteed to be finished = OP MC is always better.
They are very similar, but not the same. At least the idea is the same. I can't really say more because I haven't read this one yet. I have only read the W40K terrabyte for now.
Just the Author forcing not only the plot but the whole thing, he built his MC around the Themarians but doesnt know shi* about them, it's kinda funny. The whole thing makes no sense.
?????? They are nothing alike. The whole basis of Kryptonians is the yellow sun. Superman would see that MC gains nothing from it. Apart from that, they are similar in appearance and powers, yes, but their physiology is totally different. I remember Rilley explaining that when he casually tortured a Themarian. Pretty sure his mom said smt too (the adopted one)
BS. Themarians have built safeguards for that; they are a race of 'immortals' built around living that long as 'normal'. They literally spend more time alone, and even then, they have way better memory, to the point of easily remembering things from 100 years ago. This is just the author forcing the plot; the same thing with him not instantly noticing the problems with the watchtower.
