The quiver. The enhanced blade at her hip. White's throwing knives, one to each forearm, taken from the set she'd kept out of the pile, seated where her hands already knew to find them.

It came in through her nose before her eyes were open — copper first, the old metallic tang she'd already learned belonged to this whole place, and under it ozone, sharp and electric, and under that something organic and faintly sweet, a smell with no business being pleasant. Pheromone. The word surfaced clean from the settled data, indexed now, filed where she could reach it. The air here carried messages between things that talked in scent, and her nose was reading their mail before her eyes had opened.
