Surprisingly you can live off eating certain types of trees bark. Though, you don't eat the outer bark, but just beneath that is where the tree sends nutriants up and down. :)

I agree with you. But while in africa, if you asked someone, "Have you eaten today?" A lot of times they would say no, even after you gave them food. Because they only considered it 'eating a meal' if there was corn in it (corn meal being the major staple). Maybe it was the same in historic China.
