Maybe I'm being naive but they had the power to control it. Blackthorn allies, other good legacy families, Prof Oak, Aura Guardians and who knows. I can only see that this is being shown as an example to the world that League is corrupt, and Some legacy families are not falling ones.

I know the aim of MC is peace and improved relationships between humans and Pokemon. Wishing to improve his family strength and making the world remember Blackthorn strength is a good idea but not at the expense of such deaths. They are labelled as protectors who selflessly protected the regions for decades.
