I don't think having of the manga or anime will give you an advantage at haki. It's the same as having knowledge about karate and so on, you won't become a master by just having seen it. Joining the CP0 makes sense since they should have competent teachers regarding haki and that other stuff.

But isn't the discovery part one of the most exciting things? Some characters are dumb and will never excel even if you give them a powerful fruit, and others can make seemingly useless fruits into powerful tools. It's more rewarding this way for the reader.

Idk, some fruits are pretty useless or simply weak - you might as well wanna keep your ability to swim instead. But in One Piece, even if you get the long-nose fruit, which would allow you to increase the size and length of your nose, some random powerful pirate would use that fruit to turn his/her nose into a spear + haki and become a lethal sword fighter. The boogers of that person would be poisonous and so on, coating the nose blade. That's One Piece, the only limit is your imagination.

Yeah, me2. I liked HunterXHunter well enough but am not interested in fanfictions about it. Came here for the One Piece fun, but then (as you said) the story suddenly changed into HunterXHunter when it became most interesting. My guess is that the author realized that the protagonist got too strong too fast without any real plot stuff happening (only summaries about training, etc). Killing the 5 old geezers would have ended the story.
