Before Kryptons' destruction, one of the early signs was the presence of what it's people referred to as the green plague, a precursor to kryptonite that ravaged the populace before they managed to contain and cure it. The tectonic shifts it underwent unearthed unstable irradiated rocks, which prompted the initial investigation by Jor-El and, in a very rare case, exposed an unfortunate individual named Lar-on to red kryptonite turning him into a werewolf that was sent to the phantom zone till a cure could be found shortly before the planet blew up.
