It’s not wrong to have empathy for another human being. But to feel guilty for something that’s not your fault is something completely different the MC did not know about the abuse he had his suspicion. I’m going to guess that’s why he checked in on her and that’s when he seen it with his on eyes not before. And he stepped in and did something about it he didn’t turn his back to what he was seeing that’s all fine and good but to beat himself up and feel guilty about it just doesn’t make sense at this point because at this point in the story he doesn’t have all the facts and knowledge about what she was going through. All he knew at this point was that she was cheating on him for months that lead to him being fired with everything being thrown in his face. Now if he saved her for their past relationship and the love he once had for her and feels guilty cause he couldn’t be the person that she needed him to be that’s different.
