I think they had just finished a mission of retrieving Orochimaru's spies from Land of Wind, who were being pursued by platoon of Sand Village ninjas led by Chiyo, in which Takeshi showed them that Art indeed is an explosion, then they met up with Akatsuki Trio, where akatsuki is in its early days, Takeshi gave a dead rat to Nagato previously and this time he gave a live rabbit who peed on his hand.
